Water Resistance in Science – Year 5

Mar 2, 2026Science

To complete the Year 5 unit on forces, children explored water resistance. Braving the cold water, children explored what happened when a boat was pushed through the water compared to a large cube. Year 5 identified the forces that were working on the objects were water resistance and a push from their hand. Children described the boat as “easy to move” and “quick to push through the water”. However, they described the cube as being “slower” and “needed more effort to move”. We discussed the shape of these two items and discovered that the boat was more streamlined. Children were able to identify a number of different items that are streamlined to help them move quicker.
