Area – Year 5 Maths

Jan 26, 2025Maths

Year 5 have started their new unit in Maths which is looking at area and scaling. They began by recapping their learning from year 4 and the difference between perimeter and area. Year 5 explored how perimeter is the distance around a shape and area is the amount of a surface.

Year 5 explored different objects by using string to measure perimeter before reviewing the method to work this out more accurately via addition.

When introducing area, children used cubes to find out how many they would need to cover the area (surface) of their book. Some noticed that they could complete a row of cubes along the top, and a row down the side and use their multiplication skills to find the total amount. Year 5 discussed that this may not be the most accurate way of measuring as some of the cubes were different sizes. We will move on to look at how we can measure area in a more efficient and accurate way using multiplication.
